Cricket Australia Roles
Ambassador for Cricket Australia
My role with CA at the moment is working in conjunction with first class captains, coaches and spinners around the states and educating them in understanding the role of the spinner.
CA and my aim in this programme is to make spin bowling fashionable again as we believe in the hustle and bustle of modern day cricket the Spinners are falling behind. This is not a quick fix programme, it will take some time, but we have to start somewhere.
Captaincy, field settings, leadership and encouragement is crucial in this process.
The spin bowler has to take responsibility of understanding how to get a batsman out and what plan works against a particular style of player. When put under pressure by the batsmen attacking and trying to put them off their game, a spinner must have an action and a game plan that withstands the examination and pressure of the situation. Through this program, the result we are hoping to achieve is to identify and develop as many bowlers as possible to give the Australian Selectors and Ricky Ponting options to choose from for the selection of the Australian Cricket Team.
I am really enjoying assisting the development of the players I am working with. It is great to be able to put something back into the game that has given me so much. I am passionate about spin bowling and the captaincy of spin bowling and, hopefully, the knowledge I pass on will assist in the development of many more players and play a small part in Australia staying at the top of the cricketing ladder.
Rules Committee
My other role with CA is sitting on the rules committee with Mark Taylor, Allan Border, Michael Brown and Jack Clarke. This is exciting and very, very important to the laws and rules that we play under in domestic cricket.
Australian Cricket has the best domestic competition in the world; we need to be leaders and stay number 1. There is no need to change rules or laws for the sake of it, but, I think what this Rules Committee has done so far has made some subtle changes that will improve the standard of cricket.
